TURKISH BATH - HAMMAM
Port Palace Complex - Sunny Day Resort - Varna
History and principle of operation:
Turkish bath or hammam (hamam) is derived from the Roman Baths in ancient times. "Hammam" in Arabic means "warm, deliver heat." The Turkish bath is a celebration of the senses - heat, humidity, foam, aroma and touch, creating a work of art for a pleasurable experience.
In the Arabic world the hammam is not just a steam bath. Above all, this is an ancient ritual.
Like the Roman predecessors typical hamam consists of three main areas, which are interconnected: sicaklik (or hararet - Caldarium), which is a hot room, warm room (tepidarium) which is an intermediate room and soğukluk, which is cool room (Frigidarium).
1. The hot room (Sicaklik-Caldarium) is the most comprehensive and large dome decorated with small colorful stained glass, missing dim light. In the middle is necessarily situated high thermal massage bed of marble called "göbek taşı" (stone, lying on his stomach). Massage bed can be of different shapes on which it can lie between two and 4-5 person in one time. Around the bed are situated heated benches so-called Cournot for flushing with cold water. This room is for soaking the body through steam, water, peeling and soap massage. The floor and walls are heated for a person to sweat freely.
2. Warm room (from Rome Tepidarium) is used in the beginning before and then after using the hot room for relaxation of body and pouring with warm water.
The purpose of this room is to be a place where the spa guest goes to wash with soap and water, gradual adaptation to a normal body temperature.
3. Cool room (Soğukluk - from Rome. Frigidarium) – the recommended temperature in there is around 22 ˚- perfect way to relax fully clothed, to get refreshments, drink water and some hot drinks. Ornate beds, canopy(baldachin), the air is perfumed and nap in private booths after a massage (if available) for complete relaxation and tranquility.
The marble material and skillful handling dominates to lining, columns and arches and other decorations are fulfilled by colorful floral and geometric motifs of ceramic tiles.
Heating system like Roman (hypocaust) working through channels and pipes which hot air is heated in the boiler room. Piping system is located behind the walls and floor.
Hammam was not only for men. Hammam complexes usually contain separate rooms for men and women, or men and women are admitted on different days during the week. Turkish baths became also a social centers during the Ottoman Empire. In many cases, they become places of entertainment (eg dancing and feasting, especially in women) and ceremonies to celebrate the upcoming wedding, travel, or in honor of the newborn.
Several accessories from Roman time survive in hammams as "peshtemalat" (a special cloth of silk and / or cotton, to cover the body), wooden slippers, clogs, to prevent from slipping on wet floors, "kese" Peeling massage (coarse mitt horsehair), henna bowls and gilded soap boxes, jewelry, mirrors, and perfume bottles.
Traditionally, the masseurs in bathrooms are called "telyatsi" that help customers to spraying with water, soap and scrub their bodies.
